About the episode

When Bart's class tours the power plant, Homer waves to his son, crashes his cart into a pipe and is fired. After a fruitless job hunt he decides to jump off a bridge, but saving his family from an oncoming truck nearby turns him into a public safety campaigner. 1. 0:04 The Simpsons
  2. 0:40 To be continued...
  3. 1:35 Now, class,
  4. 1:36 I don't want this field trip to be a repeat of our infamous visit to the Springfield State
  5. 1:40 Prison.
  6. 1:40 So I want you all to be on your best behavior, especially you, Bart Simpson.
  7. 1:45 Mrs. Crababble, I didn't unlock that door.
  8. 1:52 Oh, sorry, little dudes.
  9. 1:54 Party hardy equals tardy.
  10. 1:57 All right, children, count off. One, two, three.
  11. 2:01 Hey, Otto. Hey, Otto, man. Hey, Bart, dude.
  12. 2:04 Any new tattoos, Otto?
  13. 2:06 Oh, funny you should ask, man. This morning I woke up with this one.
  14. 2:11 Whoa, I want one.
  15. 2:14 Not till you're 14, my little friend.
  16. 2:19 Bart, Bart Simpson.
  17. 2:22 Take your seat, Bart.
  18. 2:24 Oh, please, Mr. Krabappel, not next to Wendell.
  19. 2:27 He pukes on every bus ride.
  20. 2:29 No offense, Wanda.
  21. 2:31 Be that as it may, it's the only seat left.
  22. 2:34 So get in there.
  23. 2:39 Please try not to shake the seat like that.
  24. 2:42 Now, class, remember, do not stick any part of your body out the window.
  25. 2:46 We all know the tragic story of the young man who stuck his arm out the window and had it
  26. 2:50 ripped off by a big truck coming in the other direction.
  27. 2:52 And I was that boy.
  28. 2:56 Bart Simpson, sit it down.
  29. 2:58 Just about enough of your tomfoolery.
  30. 3:03 I don't feel so hot.
  31. 3:19 I don't need to stop.
  32. 3:25 Look, there's our school again.
  33. 3:28 Otto, are you sure you... It's a shortcut, Mrs.
  34. 3:31 K.
  35. 3:32 Trust me.
  36. 3:34 Mrs. Krabappel, Mrs.
  37. 3:36 Krabappel! Bart, not another word out of you,
  38. 3:38 or I'll subject you to the humiliation of making you sing in front of the class.
  39. 3:42 Can I pick the song? No.
  40. 3:44 The song will be John Henry was a steel-driving man.
  41. 3:47 Oh, no.
  42. 3:50 We're gonna make you sing, Bart Simpson.
  43. 3:52 Yeah, Bart Simpson, we're gonna make you sing.
  44. 4:02 That's it, Bart.
  45. 4:04 Why can't you be more like a... Us, Mrs.
  46. 4:07 Cravable?
  47. 4:08 Yes, Sherry and Terry.
  48. 4:10 They know how to behave.
  49. 4:13 Da-da-da-da-da-da. Well, they took Bart Simpson to the graveyard.
  50. 4:18 And they buried him in the sand. Oh, yeah.
  51. 4:21 And every locomotive, they come roaring by.
  52. 4:24 There lies a steel man.
  53. 4:26 Lord, Lord, oh, there lies a steel man. Okay, Mark, enough.
  54. 4:30 Hey, Wendell, you made it, buddy.
  55. 4:38 And so this plant harnesses the power of the atom so that we have the energy to run
  56. 4:43 everything from your favorite video game to yummy cotton candy machines.
  57. 4:49 Let's learn more about nuclear energy, shall we?
  58. 4:52 Lights?
  59. 4:57 When most people think of nuclear energy, they think of this.
  60. 5:03 But when we talk about nuclear energy, we really mean this.
  61. 5:10 But what exactly is nuclear energy?
  62. 5:13 I don't know, but I know someone who does.
  63. 5:16 Smiling Joe Fission.
  64. 5:17 Hi there, energy eaters! I'm Smilin' Joe Fishin',
  65. 5:21 your atomic tour guide to the strange and exciting world of nuclear power.
  66. 5:25 And these are rods of uranium-235.
  67. 5:28 Hi, Rod. Hey, Rod! How you doin', Rod? Hey, you guys look hot.
  68. 5:32 Of course we're hot. We're radioactive.
  69. 5:35 Uh-oh. Well, how about a dip in the pool?
  70. 5:37 Let's run into the rod!
  71. 5:40 The rod will make the water so hot, it boils!
  72. 5:45 And the steam spins turbines that generate energy.
  73. 5:50 But sit down.
  74. 5:53 Uh-oh, whoops.
  75. 5:55 Looks like there's a little leftover nuclear waste.
  76. 5:57 No problem.
  77. 5:58 I'll just put it where nobody will find it for a million years.
  78. 6:04 So, now you know the whole truth story of nuclear energy.
  79. 6:07 Our no longer misunderstood friend. So, keep on smiling.
  80. 6:15 Now, let's have even more fun.
  81. 6:27 And over here is our thermal regulator.
  82. 6:30 To your right, if you look through this window,
  83. 6:32 you'll see where our water rejoins the rest of nature's biosphere.
  84. 6:40 Hey, Bart, our dad says your dad is incompetent What does incompetent mean?
  85. 6:45 It means he spends more time yakking and scarfing down donuts than doing his job Oh,
  86. 6:50 okay, I thought you were putting him down
  87. 6:53 You know,
  88. 6:54 I defy anyone to tell the difference between these donuts and one baked today
  89. 7:01 Hey, that boy's supposed to be here any second on a field trip They been through here yet?
  90. 7:06 Come on, Simpson.
  91. 7:07 If they wanted the kids to see you sitting around on your butt and stuffing your face,
  92. 7:11 they'd take them on a tour of your house.
  93. 7:13 You're right.
  94. 7:13 I gotta get where the action is.
  95. 7:16 Coming through.
  96. 7:18 Hey, there's my dad.
  97. 7:20 Hey, Dad!
  98. 7:21 Yo, Homer!
  99. 7:23 Lulu, I'm up here!
  100. 7:25 Oh, hi, boy!
  101. 7:36 All right, who's responsible for this?
  102. 7:39 I might have known it was you, Simpson. But, sir, I...
  103. 7:42 I want to hear about it, Simpson.
  104. 7:44 You're fired.
  105. 7:45 Oh, hi, girls.
  106. 7:46 Hi, Daddy.
  107. 7:48 Oh.
  108. 8:02 Here's a good job at the fireworks factory.
  109. 8:04 Those perfectionists, forget it.
  110. 8:07 How about this?
  111. 8:08 Supervising technician at the Toxic Waste Dump.
  112. 8:11 I'm no supervising technician. I'm a technical supervisor.
  113. 8:15 I've never done anything worthwhile in my life.
  114. 8:18 I'm a big worthless nothing.
  115. 8:20 There, there, Homer.
  116. 8:22 You'll find a job.
  117. 8:23 You've caused plenty of industrial accidents and you've always bounced back.
  118. 8:27 Yeah, Dad, you can do it. Yeah, go for it, Dad.
  119. 8:30 You're right.
  120. 8:30 I'm young, I'm able-bodied, and I'll take anything.
  121. 8:33 Watch out, Springfield.
  122. 8:35 Here I come.
  123. 8:42 Don't give up, Dad.
  124. 8:45 I'm just a technical supervisor who cared too much.
  125. 8:50 Mouse Tavern. Is Mr. Freely there? Who? Freely.
  126. 8:54 First initial is IP.
  127. 8:56 Hold on, I'll check.
  128. 8:57 Uh, is IP Freely here? Hey, everybody,
  129. 9:03 I pee freely.
  130. 9:09 Wait a minute.
  131. 9:10 Listen to me, you lousy bum. When I hear the home to you, you're dead.
  132. 9:14 I swear I'm gonna slice your heart in here.
  133. 9:21 You'll get that punk someday, Mo.
  134. 9:23 I don't know. He's tough to catch. He keeps changing his name.
  135. 9:27 Mo, I think I'll have another...
  136. 9:30 Oh, I'm a little low on funds. You think you could cover me just this once?
  137. 9:34 No, sorry.
  138. 9:36 Why not?
  139. 9:37 I think after all these years, I deserve an explanation.
  140. 9:40 I don't think you're ever going to get another job and be able to pay me back.
  141. 9:43 Oh.
  142. 9:44 Don't worry, we're still friends.
  143. 9:52 Oh, oh, oh.
  144. 9:55 Are you all right, Homer?
  145. 9:57 I'm fine, I'm just thinking.
  146. 10:00 Well, I've been thinking, too.
  147. 10:03 You know, Homer, you've always been such a good provider.
  148. 10:07 But when we got married, Mr.
  149. 10:09 Burger promised I could come back to my old job anytime I wanted.
  150. 10:13 You think you can still do that kind of work?
  151. 10:16 Sure.
  152. 10:16 You never forget.
  153. 10:18 It's just like riding a bicycle.
  154. 10:20 Hey, Mama, where's my fries already?
  155. 10:29 Dad, eat something.
  156. 10:31 It's got mustard on it.
  157. 10:36 All he does is lie there like an unemployed whale.
  158. 10:40 I don't know what else to do.
  159. 10:45 There's only one thing we can do.
  160. 10:48 Take advantage of the old guy.
  161. 10:49 You gotta sign my report card, Dad.
  162. 11:14 Duff, Duff, Duff, Duff, Duff.
  163. 11:21 temporary solution.
  164. 11:24 There must be some beer here somewhere.
  165. 11:27 Ah!
  166. 11:28 Maybe in here.
  167. 11:31 Damn!
  168. 11:32 I need money!
  169. 11:41 Ick!
  170. 11:48 Oh, no.
  171. 11:50 What have I done?
  172. 11:51 I smashed open my little boy's piggy bank, and for what?
  173. 11:55 A few measly cents.
  174. 11:57 Not even enough to buy one beer.
  175. 12:00 Wait a minute, let me know. Make sure.
  176. 12:03 Not even close.
  177. 12:08 Dear family, I am an utter failure.
  178. 12:12 and you'll be better off without me.
  179. 12:15 By the time you read this, I will be in my watery grave.
  180. 12:20 I can only leave you with the words my father gave me.
  181. 12:25 Stand tall, have courage, and never give up.
  182. 12:29 I only hope I can provide a better model in death than I did in life.
  183. 12:35 Warmest regards.
  184. 12:39 Love. of Homer Jane Simpson.
  185. 13:14 Nothing's easy.
  186. 13:22 Oh, looks like young Simpson is going to kill himself.
  187. 13:27 No, maybe not.
  188. 13:28 Maybe he's just taking his boulder for a walk.
  189. 13:33 Mom, Mom, wake up. We've been robbed.
  190. 13:36 What?
  191. 13:37 Someone swipe my piggy bank.
  192. 13:40 Your father's gone too!
  193. 13:42 Look what I found!
  194. 13:47 Almost there.
  195. 13:53 Hey, you idiot! Watch where you're going!
  196. 13:59 Well, live and learn.
  197. 14:02 There he is! Don't do it, Dad!
  198. 14:13 Boy, this intersection is dangerous.
  199. 14:16 Someone ought to put a stop sign here.
  200. 14:21 Oh, Homer.
  201. 14:23 How could you think of killing yourself?
  202. 14:25 We love you.
  203. 14:26 Yeah, Dad, we love you.
  204. 14:29 Kill myself?
  205. 14:29 Killing myself is the last thing I'd ever do.
  206. 14:32 Now I have a purpose, a reason to live.
  207. 14:35 I don't care who I have to face. I don't care who I have to fight.
  208. 14:39 I will not rest until the street gets a stop sign.
  209. 14:48 Next on the agenda, Police Chief Wiggum will give us an update on our graffiti problem.
  210. 14:52 Well, now, Decker, our city is under siege by a graffiti vandal known as El Barta.
  211. 14:59 Police artists, a composite sketching culprit, if anyone has any information,
  212. 15:03 please contact us immediately.
  213. 15:06 Cool, man.
  214. 15:09 You're a tough customer. Wouldn't want to run into him in a dark alley.
  215. 15:12 And now, new business.
  216. 15:14 Homer Simpson, local resident, has something.
  217. 15:17 Mr. Simpson? Don't be nervous.
  218. 15:18 We believe in you, Homer.
  219. 15:23 Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed councilmen, boys and girls,
  220. 15:28 retired people with nothing better to do.
  221. 15:31 Danger comes in many, many forms.
  222. 15:33 From the dinosaurs that tormented our caveman ancestors to the...
  223. 15:37 Simpson, get to the point.
  224. 15:39 I think we should put a stop sign at D Street and 12th.
  225. 15:42 The other... All in favor?
  226. 15:43 Aye.
  227. 15:44 Approved. Meeting adjourned. Coffee and maple logs in the lobby.
  228. 15:48 Wow.
  229. 15:49 Hey, listen to me.
  230. 15:51 All right, Dad! Way to go, Homer!
  231. 15:54 You did it, Homer!
  232. 15:55 If they think I'm gonna stop at that stop sign, they're sadly mistaken.
  233. 16:22 Oh, Homer, I am so proud of you.
  234. 16:25 Proud? Proud of what? Well, everything.
  235. 16:29 Your tip sign, for instance.
  236. 16:31 Now people won't be caught off guard by that little...
  237. 16:34 in the road.
  238. 16:35 Uh, what a great family. But come on, we all know this is small potatoes.
  239. 16:40 There's a danger in this town that is bigger than all the dips put together.
  240. 16:44 What, Dad?
  241. 16:45 I'm talking about that.
  242. 16:49 You don't mean you're going to take on your old bosses.
  243. 16:52 Wow.
  244. 16:53 Gee, Dad's a hero.
  245. 16:55 What'd you say, son?
  246. 16:56 Nothing.
  247. 16:57 That's okay.
  248. 16:58 I'll just assume you said what I thought I heard you say.
  249. 17:03 He also brought you the speed bump,
  250. 17:07 the depth sign,
  251. 17:11 the 15-mile-per-hour speed limit on Main Street.
  252. 17:16 I give you the man whose very name is synonymous with safety,
  253. 17:21 Homer Simpson.
  254. 17:24 Thank you.
  255. 17:26 Unlike most of you, I am not a nut.
  256. 17:30 Just a minute, Mr.
  257. 17:32 Bernardin, who forces all the way, and especially Carolinas, wherever they occur.
  258. 17:40 Look at that man.
  259. 17:42 He has the crowd in the palm of his hand.
  260. 17:46 Haven't seen anything like it since Jolson.
  261. 17:48 Who is he?
  262. 17:50 That's Homer Simpson, sir.
  263. 17:52 He used to work here on the plant, but we fired him for gross incompetence.
  264. 17:56 Oh, so that's his little game. Get this Simpson character up here right now.
  265. 18:02 But Mr. Burns, I said, do it. Now do it, do it, do it!
  266. 18:07 Our lives are in the hands of men no smarter than you or I.
  267. 18:12 Many of them, incompetent bobs.
  268. 18:15 I know this because I've worked alongside them, gone bowling with them,
  269. 18:21 watched them pass me over for promotions time and again, and I say,
  270. 18:26 this stinks.
  271. 18:29 Hey, Simpson.
  272. 18:31 Burns wants to talk to you privately.
  273. 18:33 Privately?
  274. 18:34 Yes.
  275. 18:35 Stay here.
  276. 18:36 I'll be right back.
  277. 18:42 Ah, Homer Simpson.
  278. 18:45 At last we meet.
  279. 18:48 Same here.
  280. 18:49 Simpson, I want you to rejoin our power plant family.
  281. 18:54 Sorry, no can do.
  282. 18:56 Hear me out, Simpson.
  283. 18:58 I don't want you to come back as a technical supervisor
  284. 19:01 or supervising technician or whatever the hell you used to do.
  285. 19:05 I want you to be in charge of safety here at the plant.
  286. 19:10 Safety?
  287. 19:11 But, sir, if truth be known,
  288. 19:13 I actually caused more accidents around here than any other employee.
  289. 19:16 Or even a few doozies no one ever found out about.
  290. 19:19 The generous offer I'm making is good for exactly 30 seconds, Simpson.
  291. 19:25 and me in charge of safety?
  292. 19:27 This place could blow sky high.
  293. 19:29 Nah.
  294. 19:30 I'll concentrate on my work now.
  295. 19:32 Gee, this guy's desk sure is big.
  296. 19:34 I can't let Martin support the family.
  297. 19:37 This guy's got the cleanest shirt I've ever seen.
  298. 19:40 What should I... Time's up.
  299. 19:43 What the hay, I'll take the job.
  300. 19:44 Excellent.
  301. 19:46 Your first duty will be to step out on the balcony and tell that crowd
  302. 19:51 this plant is safe. What?
  303. 19:54 Go on, Homer.
  304. 19:56 Homer, Homer, Homer, Homer!
  305. 20:01 Yay!
  306. 20:03 Go, Dad!
  307. 20:05 Ladies and gentlemen, this plant is...
  308. 20:17 Sit tight, I'll be right back.
  309. 20:23 I can't do it, Mr. Burns.
  310. 20:25 You mean you're willing to give up a good job and a raise just for your principles?
  311. 20:31 Hmm.
  312. 20:32 When you put it that way, it does sound a little far-fetched.
  313. 20:35 But that's the lug you're looking at.
  314. 20:36 And I vow to continue spending every three minutes I have crusading for safety.
  315. 20:42 Of course, I'd have a lot less of those three minutes if he gave me the job.
  316. 20:47 You're not as stupid as you look, or sound, or our best testing indicates.
  317. 20:52 You've got the job.
  318. 20:54 Now get to work.
  319. 20:55 I'll get to work.
  320. 20:57 But first, I have to say goodbye to some friends.
  321. 21:04 Friends, you have come to depend on me as your safety watchdog.
  322. 21:10 So you won't spread yourself or stub your toes or blow yourselves off.
  323. 21:15 But you can't depend on me all your life.
  324. 21:18 You have to learn that there's a little Homer Simpson in all of us,
  325. 21:22 and I'm going to have to live without your respect and all.
  326. 21:28 The only reason I'm telling you this is I'm going to be leaving.
  327. 21:34 But don't worry.
  328. 21:36 I have just been appointed to do safety inspector at this very plan.
  329. 21:41 With a big turn race!
  330. 21:47 Hey, that's my pop-ups! They're dead, Hatcha!
  331. 21:53 Whoa, Edie, don't drop me. Be careful.
  332. 21:55 Over!
  333. 22:26 Thank you.
  334. 23:00 Shh.
