About the episode
Bart swallows a sharp metal Krusty-O and lands in the hospital with appendicitis, where Lisa finds that her jazz mentor, Bleeding Gums Murphy, is also a patient, and he lends her his saxophone for a school recital. After Murphy dies, Bart uses the $500 left from his lawsuit against Krusty the Clown to buy Murphy's album so Lisa can get it played on Springfield's jazz radio station.

- 0:51
Oh, my God.
- 1:22
Hey, kids, it's story time!
- 1:26
I'm gonna tell you the story of Krusty's expensive new suit.
- 1:31
His sexual harassment suit. Oh, boy. Anyway,
- 1:36
as part of Krusty's plea bargain, he has a new court-ordered sidekick, Ms.
- 1:41
No-Means-No.
- 1:43
Whoa, you're hot.
- 1:45
Let's get some dinner after the show.
- 1:48
I have dinner with all my employees, right, Sideshow Mel?
- 1:52
We've never spoken outside of work.
- 1:57
I'm surprised he doesn't try to blame his problems on his Percodan addiction.
- 2:00
It wasn't my fault. It was a percodone. If you ask me, that stuff rots your brain.
- 2:06
And I'll wait for my new sponsor.
- 2:08
Percodone!
- 2:09
Aw, crap!
- 2:11
Bart, are you ready for your history test?
- 2:14
Oh, you bet, Mom. Ask me anything. Okay.
- 2:16
Who was George Washington Carver?
- 2:20
Um, the guy who chopped up George Washington.
- 2:23
Really? Wow.
- 2:36
Bart, you said you were going to study. Oh, my stomach.
- 2:41
You just don't want to take that test. I mean, it really hurts.
- 2:45
Mom, I think he's serious.
- 2:47
Kids are so naive.
- 2:49
Lisa, when you get to be our age, you'll learn a few things.
- 2:52
Like when a sign says, do not feed the bears.
- 2:55
Man, you'd better not feed the bears.
- 2:57
Now get to school, boy.
- 3:02
Mrs. Krabappel, I can't take the test. I have a stomachache.
- 3:06
Well, that's a lame excuse for an excuse.
- 3:09
Look, if you ignore me and I die, you'll get in a lot of trouble.
- 3:13
Read page six of the school charter.
- 3:15
No teacher shall be held accountable if Bart Simpson dies.
- 3:20
We're also absolved if Milhouse gets eaten by the school snake.
- 3:23
Hey, cool!
- 3:25
There's a rabbit in here!
- 3:28
Mrs.
- 3:29
Krabappel, I'm done failing the test. Can I please go to the nurse?
- 3:33
Gosh, Bart, maybe you really are in pain.
- 3:35
Well, it would be cruel not to let you go.
- 3:49
Now you may go.
- 3:52
Lunch Lady Doris, why are you here? Budget cuts.
- 3:55
They've even got groundskeeper Willie teaching French.
- 3:59
Bonjour!
- 4:00
You cheese-eating surrender monkeys!
- 4:03
Look, my stomach really hurts.
- 4:05
All I can give you are these chewable Prozac for kids.
- 4:08
Your choice. Manic-depressive mouse or the blue bird of unhappiness.
- 4:14
Superintendent Chalmers, I'd like you to meet our new school nurse, Lunch Lady Doris.
- 4:18
Nice to see you. Seymour, why is that student lying unconscious on the floor?
- 4:22
Well, in many cases, the floor is the best...
- 4:24
Oh, look, here comes Lumpy, the school snake.
- 4:28
Help!
- 4:30
Oh, Lord.
- 4:39
Don't worry, son.
- 4:40
You'll be fine.
- 4:41
This boy's appendix is inflamed and about to burst,
- 4:45
which will make it easier to find once I get in there.
- 4:50
Man, these are primo seats. I could really go for a hot dog.
- 4:54
Homer, this is an operation.
- 4:57
Hot dogs! Get your hot dogs here!
- 4:59
Woohoo!
- 5:00
Okay, Bart. I will count to three and you will be sound asleep.
- 5:05
One, two, three.
- 5:08
Out like a light! Scalper.
- 5:11
Ah!
- 5:12
Whoopsie. Huh. Maybe if I fiddle with these knobs.
- 5:16
Hey, I smell gas.
- 5:19
Pleasant gas.
- 5:21
Night-night gas.
- 5:26
How's my special little guy?
- 5:29
How you feeling, big brother?
- 5:31
Oh, this is wonderful.
- 5:33
You're alive.
- 5:35
No thanks to you, Homer. Why, you little...
- 5:41
Now, Homer, please. The boy's just had a very serious operation.
- 5:45
All right.
- 5:47
Now, but I found the culprit, the jagged metal cereal O.
- 5:51
Wicked.
- 5:52
I got this cool scar and I get to miss a week of school.
- 5:57
Dr. Hibbert, can I have my appendix out?
- 6:03
Why not? Follow me, kids. Nurse, prep these children.
- 6:09
I'm glad you're okay, Bart.
- 6:22
Bleeding Gums Murphy!
- 6:24
Little Lisa, it's good to see you again.
- 6:27
It's been a long time.
- 6:31
My friends call me Bleeding Gums.
- 6:33
Ew, how'd you get a name like that? Well, let me put it this way.
- 6:37
You ever been to the dentist?
- 6:39
Yeah.
- 6:39
Not me. I suppose I should go to one. But I got enough pain in my life as it is.
- 6:46
What are you here for? My brother just had his appendix out.
- 6:49
Is he gonna be okay? Hello, I'm Dr. Cheeks.
- 6:53
I'm doing my rounds, and I'm a little behind.
- 6:55
He'll be fine.
- 6:59
Lisa, I sure am glad you dropped by. You're the first visitor I've had.
- 7:04
What about your family?
- 7:06
I don't really have a family.
- 7:07
All I had was a little brother who grew up to become a doctor.
- 7:11
He used to laugh at the most inappropriate times.
- 7:15
Hey, I've got an older brother that I'll never see.
- 7:17
He's a jazz musician or some such. Go away.
- 7:20
Bye-bye. It must be awful to be all alone in the world.
- 7:24
Well, I always had my music. I learned at the feet of Blind Willie Witherspoon.
- 7:31
I've been playing jazz for 30 years, and I just can't make a go of it.
- 7:35
I want you to have my saxophone. This isn't a saxophone.
- 7:39
It's an umbrella.
- 7:40
So I've been playing an umbrella for 30 years?
- 7:42
Why didn't anybody tell me?
- 7:44
We all thought it was funny.
- 7:47
That's not funny. Then I got my big break.
- 7:50
I was on Steve Allen's Tonight Show.
- 7:55
Now, a brilliant jazz musician who's inspired me to do some improv poetry.
- 8:00
Twinkle, twinkle, groovy cat. How I wonder where you at.
- 8:03
I really love the way you cook, just like me when I wrote this book,
- 8:06
How to Make Love to Steve Allen.
- 8:08
From the author of Happiness is a Naked Steve Allen,
- 8:11
Journey to the Center of Steve Allen, and The Joy of Cooking Steve Allen.
- 8:15
I cut my first and only album, Sax on the Beach.
- 8:19
But then I spent all my money on my $1,500 a day habit.
- 8:25
I'd like another Fabergé egg, please.
- 8:28
Sir, don't you think you've had enough? I'll tell you when I've had enough.
- 8:34
When was the last time you worked?
- 8:36
In 86, when I did a guest shot on the Cosby show.
- 8:41
Hey, kids, meet Grandpa Murphy.
- 8:45
We have three grandpas already.
- 8:47
This one is a great jazz musician.
- 8:50
Oh, they all are. Oh, oh. You see, the kids,
- 8:54
they listen to the rap music,
- 8:56
which gives them the brain damage with their hipping and the hopping and the bipping
- 9:02
and the bopping, so they don't know what the jazz is all about.
- 9:07
You see, jazz is like Jell-O pudding pop.
- 9:11
No, actually, it's more like Kodak film.
- 9:13
No, actually, jazz is like the new Coke.
- 9:17
It'll be around forever. Ha, ha, ha.
- 9:22
Wow, you've had some career.
- 9:24
Although the moral seems to be that a lifetime of jazz leaves you sad and lonely.
- 9:28
Well, before you came to visit, I would have agreed with you.
- 9:35
This just in.
- 9:36
Krusty the Clown staged a press conference today to defend himself against charges that
- 9:41
his products are unsafe. his theme park is a death trap,
- 9:44
and that he's marketing videos of Tonya Harding's wedding night.
- 9:48
And I contend that those tourists were decapitated before they entered the Krustyland
- 9:53
House of Knives. Next question.
- 9:55
What about that little boy who got appendicitis from eating your cereal?
- 10:00
To prove that this metal-o is harmless, I will personally eat one.
- 10:05
See, there's nothing... Gah! Oh!
- 10:08
Oh, yeah!
- 10:10
Oh! Ah, boy! This thing is shredding my insides!
- 10:15
Ah, crusty. That wasn't the metal one. That was a regular crustio.
- 10:19
It's poison.
- 10:21
So, you all set for your reciter? I sure am.
- 10:25
Look.
- 10:26
I stopped brushing my teeth so I can play just like you.
- 10:29
Oh, Lisa, honey. Music comes from what's in your heart, not what's on your teeth.
- 10:35
Come on, let's jam.
- 10:38
Lift me,
- 10:39
won't you lift me Above the old routine
- 10:45
Make it nice,
- 10:49
play it clean Jazz man
- 11:00
When the jazz man's testifying A
- 11:06
faithless man believes We can sing you into
- 11:12
paradise Or bring you to your knees
- 11:18
Jazz man
- 11:23
Oh, Jasmine
- 11:31
Hey, Moe, what do you give me for an AA chip?
- 11:35
Uh, Bonnie, this is a five-minute chip.
- 11:37
Eh, it's worth the paps.
- 11:43
Baby, you are gonna knock him dead.
- 11:48
Here, take this for luck.
- 11:51
Your sax!
- 11:52
Thank you so much!
- 12:00
Now I have learned that most of the orchestra is having their appendixes removed.
- 12:05
So without further ado,
- 12:06
I give you the remnants of the Springfield Elementary School Orchestra.
- 12:10
On saxophone, Lisa Simpson. On triangle, Martin Prince.
- 12:15
And with a flute up his nose, Ralph Wiggum.
- 12:19
That's some nice floating, boy.
- 12:21
They will be playing Stars and Stripes forever.
- 12:23
Hopefully not forever.
- 12:30
You suck!
- 12:44
Hey, Fleeting Gums! I was great, and I owe it all to...
- 12:48
What happened to Mr. Murphy?
- 12:51
I'm sorry.
- 12:52
He passed away.
- 13:06
Lisa, honey, are you going to be okay?
- 13:09
Bleeding gums was my hero, and I never got to tell him how I felt.
- 13:13
Oh, I'm sure he knew. And I'm sure that wherever he is now, he's happy.
- 13:17
But he was the only person who had the same love for music that I do.
- 13:23
Thank you.
- 13:25
Oh, Dad, why did he have to die?
- 13:28
Well, it's like the time that your cat Snowball got run over.
- 13:32
Remember, honey?
- 13:33
Yeah. What I'm saying is, all we have to do is go down to the pound and get a new Jazzman.
- 13:40
Oh, Dad!
- 13:45
Oh, I blew it again.
- 13:47
What?
- 13:52
Hey, Lise, you still upset about that jazz guy?
- 13:54
If it helps, I believe that after you die, you can come back as whatever you want.
- 14:00
I'll be a butterfly.
- 14:01
How come?
- 14:03
Because nobody ever suspects the butterfly.
- 14:10
I didn't burn down the school. It was the butterfly, I tell you.
- 14:13
the butterfly.
- 14:15
He's crazy, boys. Get the taser.
- 14:23
Maybe I need to talk to somebody with a little more age and wisdom.
- 14:27
Death stalks you at every turn.
- 14:30
Grandpa?
- 14:31
Well, it does.
- 14:33
There it is. Death.
- 14:36
It's only Maggie.
- 14:39
Oh, yeah. You know, at my age, the mind starts playing tricks.
- 14:43
So, ah, death!
- 14:46
That's only the cat. Oh, ah, death!
- 14:49
That's Maggie again, Grandpa.
- 14:51
Oh, where were we?
- 14:53
Death!
- 14:56
How come it won't stop hurting?
- 14:59
Oh, Lisa, it's normal to be sad when a friend dies,
- 15:02
and Bleeding Gums was a good friend to you.
- 15:04
But nobody is really gone as long as we remember them.
- 15:08
Lisa, honey, if you really want to preserve his memory, I recommend getting a tattoo.
- 15:13
It preserves the things you love.
- 15:16
Starland Focal Band? They suck!
- 15:19
Death!
- 15:28
Isn't anybody gonna show up? Well, Lisa, we waited an hour.
- 15:33
Dearly beloved,
- 15:35
we are gathered here today to bid farewell to Blood and Gunsmurphy.
- 15:40
No, it was Bleeding Gums Murphy.
- 15:43
Ugh.
- 15:44
Anyway, Bloody Gums Murphy was quite the sousaphone player.
- 15:48
Saxophone!
- 15:49
He was a jazz musician.
- 15:51
You didn't know him. Nobody knew him. But he was a great man.
- 15:55
And I won't rest until all of Springfield knows the name of Bleeding Gums Murphy.
- 16:01
And I won't rest until I've gotten a hot dog.
- 16:03
Homer, this is a cemetery.
- 16:05
Hot dogs.
- 16:06
Get your hot dogs here.
- 16:08
Woo-hoo! What do you do, follow my husband around?
- 16:12
Lee, he's putting my kids to college.
- 16:19
Good news, Bart.
- 16:21
The Crusty O Cereal Corp has settled your case for $100,000.
- 16:25
Less, of course, my legal fees. What kind of legal fees?
- 16:29
Well, for a case this complex, I had to assemble a crack team of lawyers.
- 16:33
Ronald Chaporo, trial attorney.
- 16:35
Albert Dershman, who can hold three billiard balls in his mouth.
- 16:39
How much of the $100 do I get?
- 16:43
$500?
- 16:45
Yes, well, uh... Cool.
- 16:47
Glad you're happy.
- 16:48
Let's roll.
- 16:52
I can't believe it. $500!
- 16:55
Just think what I can do with that money.
- 17:00
$500 on red.
- 17:04
The winner is black.
- 17:08
Cool.
- 17:09
Mom, I want to honor Beating Gums' memory, but I don't know where to start Ooh,
- 17:13
maybe you could get the local jazz station to do a tribute to him, huh?
- 17:17
Jazz, pfft, they just make it up as they go along, I could do that
- 17:24
That's Mary Had a Little Lamb Okay, then this
- 17:29
That's the same thing, you just replace these with twos Hi, I have a request,
- 17:35
I would like you to do a tribute to Beating Gums Murphy, please Oh, I'd love to,
- 17:39
little sister, but we don't have his album.
- 17:40
What if I could find it? Well, I'd spend it for you, but you know,
- 17:44
ain't no one gonna hear it. Our broadcast range is only 23 feet,
- 17:47
which makes us the most powerful jazz station in the entire U.S.
- 17:50
of A. Gee, your station has a lot of problems.
- 17:53
Tell me about it. Just look at our morning guy.
- 17:55
Hello, this is Mole Man in the morning.
- 17:59
Good Mole Man to you.
- 18:01
Today, part four of our series of the agonizing pain in which I live every day.
- 18:10
$250?
- 18:12
But I need that album to honor the memory of Bleeding Gums Murphy.
- 18:16
He's dead?
- 18:16
Well, why didn't you say so?
- 18:23
Oh... Where am I gonna get $500?
- 18:36
Now drive, Smithies, drive!
- 18:45
Excuse me, my good man, I have $500 to blow.
- 18:48
What have you got?
- 18:49
Behold, the ultimate pug!
- 18:53
I'll take it!
- 19:07
Lisa, look what I've got.
- 19:10
Ta-da!
- 19:12
Bart, I can't believe it. But why?
- 19:15
When I said my stomach hurt, you were the only one who believed me.
- 19:19
Oh, thank you.
- 19:20
But $500?
- 19:22
You'll never see that much money again. Oh, yeah?
- 19:26
Take a look at this.
- 19:30
I got the album.
- 19:34
Here, you can listen to it on this.
- 19:40
I did the best I could, Bleeding Gums.
- 20:05
Attention all units. Attention all units.
- 20:09
Poison gas cloud heading for...
- 20:14
Oh, that's nice.
- 20:16
Hey, it's getting cloudy.
- 20:18
Oh, boy.
- 20:32
That was for you, Bleeding Gums.
- 20:36
You've made an old jazz man happy, Lisa.
- 20:40
You must avenge my death, Kimba.
- 20:42
I mean, Simba.
- 20:44
Luke, I am your father.
- 20:47
This is CNN.
- 20:49
Will you guys pipe down? I'm saying goodbye to Lisa.
- 20:53
We're sorry.
- 20:54
I don't want you to go.
- 20:57
Sorry, but I have to.
- 20:59
Goodbye.
- 21:07
Oh, what the heck? Once more from the top.
- 21:10
Yay!
- 21:18
When the Jazzman's testifying A faithless
- 21:24
man believes He can send you into
- 21:28
paradise Or bring you to your knees
- 21:35
Jazz man
- 21:39
Take my blues away Make my fame
- 21:44
the same as yours With every change you play
- 21:53
Jazzman, oh, Jazzman
- 22:19
One more time!
- 22:21
Oh, come on, Lisa.
- 22:23
I got a date with Billie Holiday.
- 22:27
Shh!
- 22:30
We'll be right back.
