What happens

Mr. Burns, a thin stooped man in a dark cap and green scarf, stands on a snowy slope beside a bundled-up man in a red knit hat and purple jacket, while a line of winter-dressed contestants, including Carl in a green puffer jacket, waits along a red-marked course with evergreen trees and a mountain behind them. Burns waves a revolver, walks along the line with the gun raised, and then fires, a puff of smoke rising from the barrel. He sinks into a hole in the snow as red streaks spread across the white ground along the red line.
