What happens

A crowd gathers in a bright, pale-walled room. In the foreground, an older man with swept-back white hair and a red jacket and blue tie speaks into a handheld microphone while his mouth opens and closes, and he gradually looks sideways. Beside him, the thin, bespectacled assistant Smithers, in a green sweater, clutches a thick stack of papers against his chest, talking and glancing toward the man with the microphone. Behind them, a pale clown-faced figure with a red nose, a woman with long dark curly hair and a headband, and other onlookers in the background are visible as the speaker turns his head and Smithers looks down at the papers.
