What happens

No regular characters appear in this opening sequence. It begins on a black screen, then shows drifting tan clouds against a blue sky while the title text THE SIMPSONS forms and comes into focus in yellow letters. The clouds keep sliding across the view as the title remains visible. A yellow-outlined circular window then opens onto a cartoon view of Springfield, with a grey nuclear power plant cooling tower bearing an atom symbol, pink and orange buildings, green hills and red-and-yellow fields. The view pulls toward the plant and a sign reading Welcome to Springfield appears at the bottom, while a building labeled Springfield Elementary-style sign is visible beside the tower, and a large grey tower with an atom symbol sits in the foreground.
