About the episode
Mr. Burns runs Bart over with his car, and after a brief tour of heaven and hell, Bart regains consciousness in the hospital with lawyer Lionel Hutz at his bedside. When Burns offers only $100, Homer sues him for a million dollars, backed by Dr. Nick Riviera's inflated diagnosis. Marge's honest testimony sinks the case, leaving Homer resentful and unsure whether he still loves her.

Let's go.
- 1:46
I, uh, I think the boy's hurt. Oh, for crying out loud.
- 1:50
Just give him a nickel and let's get going.
- 1:52
I think we should call an ambulance, sir.
- 1:54
Dude, what the...
- 1:59
Hey, cool, I'm dead.
- 2:08
Please hold on to the handrail. Do not spit over the side.
- 2:13
Por favor, aguántese en la baranda.
- 2:17
No escupas en los lábios. Inhortense.
- 2:19
Great Grandpa Simpson.
- 2:21
Please hold on to the handrail. Snowball.
- 2:24
Do not spit over the side.
- 2:31
We told you to hold on to the handrail.
- 2:34
We asked you not to spit over the side. Maybe he must stay a lot, man.
- 2:46
Howdy, stranger.
- 2:48
I'm Bart Simpson.
- 2:49
Who the hell are you?
- 2:50
Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm the devil.
- 2:55
And you've earned eternal damnation for your lifetime of evil deeds, Bart.
- 2:59
Spitting off the escalator just clinched it.
- 3:01
Hey, I'm innocent, man.
- 3:06
Innocent.
- 3:08
Everybody's innocent.
- 3:09
Okay, let's just pull up your file here.
- 3:13
Okay.
- 3:15
Hmm, seems to be a mistake.
- 3:17
According to this,
- 3:17
you're not due to arrive here until the next time the Yankees win the pennant.
- 3:20
That's nearly a century from now.
- 3:22
Boy, is my face red.
- 3:23
Bart!
- 3:26
Um, say, is there anything I can do to avoid coming back here?
- 3:29
Oh, sure, yeah, but, uh, you wouldn't like it.
- 3:32
Oh, okay.
- 3:33
See you later, then. Goodbye, Bart. Remember, lie, cheat, steal,
- 3:37
and listen to heavy metal music.
- 3:39
Yes, sir.
- 3:47
Dr. Warner, one-hand radiology, please.
- 3:50
Dr. Warner. Where'd you wake? Oh, Bart, we thought for a minute you'd gone away from us.
- 3:56
I did go away, Mom.
- 3:57
I was miles and miles and miles away, writhing in agony in the pits of hell.
- 4:02
And you were there. And you, and you, and you.
- 4:07
You I've never seen before.
- 4:08
Hey, yeah, who are you? I saw you chasing Bart's ambulance.
- 4:11
Hutz is the name, Mr. Simpson.
- 4:13
Lionel Hutz, attorney at law. Here's my card.
- 4:16
It turns into a sponge when you put it in water.
- 4:18
Ooh, classy.
- 4:18
I'd like to talk to you about bringing legal action against the fiend who did this to your
- 4:23
boy.
- 4:24
Well, the fiend who did this to my boy is my boss.
- 4:28
And besides, doctor says it's just a bump on the head and a broken toe, nothing serious.
- 4:33
Doctors.
- 4:34
Doctors are idiots.
- 4:35
There's no telling what kind of permanent injuries he might have.
- 4:38
You might have to wait on him hand and foot for the rest of his natural life.
- 4:43
That's the downside.
- 4:44
Now, here's the good part.
- 4:45
You can ching, ching, ching, cash in on this tragedy.
- 4:49
Excuse me, Mr. Hutz.
- 4:51
Are you a shyster? How does a nice little girl like you know a big word like that?
- 4:55
Mr. Hutz, this is hardly the time or place to discuss this.
- 4:59
You're right, you're right.
- 5:00
When you feel up to it, come over to my office and we'll talk about it.
- 5:04
Lionel Hutz, attorney at law. What's that, a broken neck?
- 5:06
Great!
- 5:08
Hello, Dr. Hibbert. Hello, Lisa.
- 5:10
Well, we've got a nasty bump on our head, haven't we?
- 5:13
Ow!
- 5:14
Quit it. And a little tiny broken toe. Ow!
- 5:17
Quit it. Is he well enough for me to start mothering him unbearably, Doctor?
- 5:20
Hmm, better let him rest up a while first.
- 5:24
Hey, Simpson, I heard Mr. Burns crushed your boy.
- 5:27
Yeah. If I wasn't so spineless, I'd march into Mr.
- 5:32
Burns' office right now and... Simpson!
- 5:35
Mr. Burns wants you to march into his office right now.
- 5:38
Uh-oh.
- 5:41
Ah, Simpson, at last we meet.
- 5:44
Nice to meet you too, sir.
- 5:46
My attorneys have advised me to pay you for running over your child,
- 5:50
so I'm cutting you a check. Really?
- 5:53
Great.
- 6:01
$100.
- 6:02
Of course, you'll have to sign a waiver relinquishing your rights as soon as so forth.
- 6:05
Really a formality. A hundred bucks?
- 6:08
Well, it was a very generous offer, sir, but medical bills alone...
- 6:13
Oh, so extortion, Simpson.
- 6:15
Very well. Then you get nothing.
- 6:17
I have the finest lawyers in Springfield, Simpson.
- 6:20
Tangle with me, and I'll crush you like a paper cup.
- 6:24
Uh...
- 6:28
Throw him out, Smithers! You don't have to do that, Mr.
- 6:31
Burns.
- 6:32
I can throw myself out.
- 6:38
Ooh.
- 6:40
Lionel Hoods.
- 6:45
Right in here, Mr. Simpson.
- 6:47
Any calls, Della?
- 6:48
Calls?
- 6:49
Oh, calls, yes.
- 6:51
The Supreme Court called again.
- 6:53
They need your help on some freedom thing.
- 6:55
Tell them to sit tight.
- 6:57
I'll get back to them.
- 6:58
This way, Mr. Simpson.
- 7:00
You sure have got some education, Mr. Hutch.
- 7:04
Yes, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Oxford, the Sorbonne, the Louvre.
- 7:09
Oh.
- 7:11
Oh, well.
- 7:12
Mr. Simpson, the state bar forbids me from promising you a big cash settlement.
- 7:17
But just between you and me, I promise you a big cash settlement.
- 7:23
My fee is 50%. Fifty percent?
- 7:26
You'll be getting more than just a lawyer, Mr.
- 7:28
Simpson.
- 7:28
You'll also be getting this exquisite faux pearl necklace, a $99 value,
- 7:33
as our gift to you.
- 7:36
Well, I don't know.
- 7:38
You and I might have different ideas about just how big a big cash settlement is.
- 7:44
A million dollars?
- 7:46
Oh, I stand corrected!
- 7:48
A million bucks is A-OK!
- 8:01
Now we'll get a real doctor's opinion.
- 8:06
Bad nose.
- 8:08
Your son is a very sick boy.
- 8:12
Just look at the x-rays.
- 8:14
You see that dark spot there?
- 8:16
Whiplash. Whiplash? Oh no.
- 8:19
And this smudge here that looks like my fingerprint?
- 8:23
No, that's trauma.
- 8:26
Am I going to die?
- 8:28
Yes, son.
- 8:30
Homer?
- 8:32
No, of course you're not going to die.
- 8:35
Everything's fine.
- 8:36
Will I ever play baseball again? No!
- 8:41
But I played baseball this morning. That's right, he did.
- 8:45
Excuse me, but Dr. Hibbert has been our family physician for years,
- 8:49
and he thought Bart was fine. Oh, Dr. Hibbert from Johns Hopkins Medical School.
- 8:55
With all due respect, Mrs. Simpson, you're not a doctor.
- 8:58
The boy's not a doctor. I'm not a doctor.
- 9:00
The only person in this room who even comes close is this man.
- 9:04
Stop!
- 9:05
You're embarrassing me. Doctor,
- 9:07
are you sure there isn't a little soft tissue trauma in the facial area?
- 9:11
Oh, yeah.
- 9:13
Tons of it. Just say when.
- 9:16
A million dollars?
- 9:17
Smithers! I want this Homer G. Simpson fired!
- 9:21
Do you think that's wise, Mr. Burns?
- 9:23
I mean, think of the headlines.
- 9:30
Huh?
- 9:32
Ooh.
- 9:34
What about the headlines?
- 9:36
Well,
- 9:36
the press might be critical of you for firing the crippled boy's father so soon after the
- 9:41
accident.
- 9:41
Well, all right, then. I don't want to seem like an ogre.
- 9:45
I'll bide my time Let him twist in the wind Slowly,
- 9:51
slowly And then when the papers have found Their new flavor of the month You'll find
- 9:57
out this cat has claws Good thinking, sir
- 10:01
Now, let's pretend you're on the witness stand How are you, Bart?
- 10:06
Fine Oh, fine, isn't that nice? Bart says he's fine Wrong!
- 10:10
You are not fine! You are in constant pain!
- 10:13
I am in constant pain Dad, may I please make an observation?
- 10:17
Oh, what is it?
- 10:18
I think this is all a charade to make Bart look more injured than he really is.
- 10:22
Maybe Lisa does have a point.
- 10:24
I don't mind you boys doing this in the living room, but in court,
- 10:28
doesn't Bart have to tell the truth?
- 10:30
Yeah, but what is truth, if you follow me?
- 10:32
Now, Bart, can you roll your eyes back in your head like this?
- 10:37
Oh, you mean like I'm dead? Yeah, sure.
- 10:40
The kid's a pro.
- 10:42
Springfield Municipal Court is now in session.
- 10:45
Judge Moulton presiding.
- 10:48
Your Honor,
- 10:48
my client has instructed me to remind the court how rich and important he is,
- 10:52
and that he is not like other men. I should be able to run over as many kids as I want.
- 11:01
Mr. Burns, I must warn you that if you continue to disrupt the court in this way,
- 11:05
I will have to cite you for contempt. You wouldn't dare.
- 11:09
Well, no, I guess I wouldn't. Calling Bartholomew J.
- 11:14
Simpson to the stand.
- 11:16
Oh,
- 11:19
please.
- 11:20
Hello, Bart.
- 11:21
Now,
- 11:22
you know the difference between telling the truth and telling a lie, don't you, son?
- 11:28
Maybe.
- 11:30
Uh-huh.
- 11:30
Well, you wouldn't lie to the United States, would you, Bart?
- 11:35
No. No. No.
- 11:37
Good.
- 11:38
Proceed, Mr. Hutts.
- 11:40
Thank you, Your Honor.
- 11:41
Now, Bart,
- 11:42
I want you to tell the jury in your own words exactly what happened on the day of the
- 11:46
accident.
- 11:47
Yes, sir.
- 11:48
It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
- 11:51
I was playing in my wholesome, childlike way,
- 11:54
little realizing that I was about to be struck down by the luxury car of death.
- 12:03
Defenseless child at 3 o'clock.
- 12:12
Luckily, I was not killed that day.
- 12:14
Although sometimes I wish I had been.
- 12:20
No, he's lying.
- 12:23
Now that's believable testimony.
- 12:30
Now, Mr. Burns,
- 12:31
would you please relate in your own words exactly what really happened on the day of the
- 12:37
accident?
- 12:37
Certainly.
- 12:38
Oh, it was a beautiful day.
- 12:41
The sun was shining.
- 12:42
I was driving to the orphanage to pass out toys.
- 12:45
Suddenly, that incorrigible Simpson boy darted in front of me.
- 12:51
Please don't let me get him.
- 12:55
Oh, my goodness.
- 12:57
Look what's happened. Oh, it's not important, sir.
- 12:59
Let's drive on. Boy, you despicable, cool-blooded monster.
- 13:03
Regardless of what you think,
- 13:05
we must summon help and comfort the dear boy until an ambulance arrives.
- 13:12
No! Take me!
- 13:14
I'm old!
- 13:17
That's what happened.
- 13:22
What are you looking at me like that for?
- 13:24
You believed his cock and bull story.
- 13:26
It's looking good, Mr. Simpson.
- 13:28
It's looking very, very good.
- 13:32
They hate me?
- 13:34
Well, what trial were you watching?
- 13:36
Maybe a settlement. Oh, yes, settlement.
- 13:38
Fine.
- 13:39
Hang your heads in shame. You overpriced, underbrand, glorified notary publics.
- 13:45
Just get that big ape to my house tonight, and we'll buy them all for the banana or two.
- 13:50
And that ugly customer was the last Indonesian rhino on Earth.
- 13:55
I didn't know you liked animals.
- 13:58
Oh, I don't like everything about them. Just their heads.
- 14:02
Well, would you care for some wine, old buddy?
- 14:05
Don't mind if I do?
- 14:07
Go, go.
- 14:09
Bottoms up, Simpson.
- 14:10
There's plenty more where that came from.
- 14:15
Mr. Burns, are you trying to get me drunk?
- 14:18
Yes.
- 14:19
Now then, Homer, our old chum,
- 14:20
I'm sure you agree with me that this trial is an affront to our collective dignity.
- 14:25
What do you say we settle this man to man?
- 14:28
You mean duke it out?
- 14:31
No.
- 14:32
I mean I'm prepared to offer you a most generous cash settlement.
- 14:36
A princely sum.
- 14:38
Well, a handsome sum that can end this little imbroglio once and for all.
- 14:48
$500,000.
- 14:50
Goodness!
- 14:52
Don't answer me now. Relax.
- 14:55
Talk it over with the missus.
- 14:56
Soak in the opulence of your surroundings.
- 14:58
and dream of what might be.
- 15:01
Smithers, let's go pat on my nose.
- 15:04
Well, Marge, what do you think? I don't know.
- 15:07
Maybe we should take his money and put all this ugliness behind us.
- 15:12
The fish is in the pan.
- 15:15
What do you think, Homer?
- 15:16
I'll tell you what I think. I think he thinks I'm an idiot!
- 15:20
The only reason he's offering us this is because he knows he's going to lose the trial and
- 15:26
have to pay us a cool million.
- 15:28
I feel faint. $500,000!
- 15:31
I spit on his $500,000!
- 15:37
Homer, what's happened to you?
- 15:40
All this greediness and lying and shifty lawyers and phony doctors.
- 15:44
Phony doctors, hello.
- 15:46
Do you know what I'd settle for if it was up to me?
- 15:48
Bart's medical bills and an apology.
- 15:51
And you won't even get that. Sorry, office expired.
- 15:54
I guess we'll just have to let the jury decide.
- 15:55
12 good men in true good day smithers release sounds
- 16:04
your honor i would like to call to the stand mrs homer j
- 16:09
simpson
- 16:17
do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth to help your god
- 16:23
Yes, I do. She sounded like she was taking that awful seriously.
- 16:27
Oh, the truth.
- 16:30
Mrs. Simpson, does the name Julius Hibbert mean anything to you?
- 16:35
Yes.
- 16:36
He's been our family physician and trusted friend ever since the day I became a mother.
- 16:41
He's seen us through everything from colds to empatigo with competence and loving care.
- 16:46
But wait a minute.
- 16:47
I'm confused. This court heard expert testimony from one Dr.
- 16:53
Nick Riviera.
- 16:55
What is your opinion of him?
- 16:57
Hmm... Mrs. Simpson?
- 16:59
I'm sorry, but my mother always said if you can't say anything nice,
- 17:02
don't say anything at all. Will that hold up in court?
- 17:05
No, I've tried it before.
- 17:07
Mrs. Simpson, what is your opinion of Dr.
- 17:09
Riviera? And let me remind you that you're under oath.
- 17:13
Hmm... Well, to be honest,
- 17:15
he seemed a lot more concerned about wrapping Bart in bandages than in making him feel
- 17:21
better.
- 17:22
And he mispronounced words that even I know, like abdomen.
- 17:26
And his office was dirty.
- 17:28
Now that I think about it, I'm not sure he's even a doctor.
- 17:32
And Mrs. Simpson, could you describe for us in your own words,
- 17:36
Bart's intense mental anguish and suffering?
- 17:40
Well, I don't know how intense it was.
- 17:44
Uh-huh.
- 17:45
But, well, I guess he did miss three days of school.
- 17:48
Oh, three days. Although he doesn't really like school all that much.
- 17:51
No, no. So I guess that may not count as anguish.
- 17:54
No, it doesn't, necessarily.
- 17:55
It was a little hard on me having him around the house all that time.
- 17:59
Could you put a dollar amount on all these hardships?
- 18:03
Well, we pay Bart five dollars a week to take out the trash.
- 18:06
I suppose if he'd been able to do it that week, we might have given him the five dollars.
- 18:12
Five dollars?
- 18:13
But your lawyer, assuming he is a lawyer, is asking for a million.
- 18:18
Well, we can't blame them for trying, can we?
- 18:22
Thank you very much, Mrs. Simpson. Oh, Marv!
- 18:29
I'm going to write a figure on this piece of paper.
- 18:32
It's not quite as large as the last one But I think you'll find it fair
- 18:38
I think we should take it
- 18:40
A million dollars
- 18:43
My wife cost me a million dollars Homer, would you like some more macaroni and cheese?
- 18:49
Yeah, a million dollars worth your treacherous snake woman Oh,
- 18:52
thank you Some string beans? No, I don't want any string beans either,
- 18:56
you two-timing backstabbing Uh-oh, better answer Oh,
- 18:59
thank you Some celery with cream cheese on it Just mouth polite nothings.
- 19:03
Oh, thank you. You know what would have really been cool?
- 19:06
If we got that million bucks. Art, please.
- 19:08
What? We could have bought tons of great stuff, Mom.
- 19:12
Maids, a pool, fancy sweaters.
- 19:14
Stop me if I'm wrong. Marge, dear,
- 19:16
would it be all right if I went over to Moe's for a drink?
- 19:19
Sure.
- 19:20
I don't know if I'll ever come back here.
- 19:22
Good night.
- 19:24
My woman's intuition is telling me something.
- 19:26
I wonder what... Oh, my God.
- 19:32
Well, that's it. I guess this is the class I'm gonna die in.
- 19:36
No, you're better off.
- 19:37
Rich people aren't happy. From the day they're born to the day they die,
- 19:41
they think they're happy, but trust me, they ain't.
- 19:45
Moe, we should shut up.
- 19:48
Hey!
- 19:49
How about you?
- 19:51
I'm a chick.
- 19:52
And it's not even ladies now.
- 19:54
Hey, hey, guys.
- 19:56
Look it off.
- 19:57
It's just my wife. Well, hello.
- 19:59
My name is Marge.
- 20:04
Homer, I'd like you to forgive me for doing the right thing.
- 20:08
No, Marge. We've squabbled over money before.
- 20:12
Never this much.
- 20:13
I mean,
- 20:14
I know this is different than that time I washed your pants with a 20 in the pocket,
- 20:17
but I... No, no, no. You think this is about money?
- 20:21
Well, it's not.
- 20:22
It's worse, Marge.
- 20:24
I'm afraid that from now on, when I look at you,
- 20:27
I'm not gonna see the wife by my side or the mother of my children I'm just gonna
- 20:33
see the dame who blew my one big chance What are you saying, Homer?
- 20:38
I'm saying she's been your wife for ten years You've had three children together It's time
- 20:44
to be honest with her I'm not sure I love you anymore
- 20:48
But don't worry,
- 20:49
I'll never let on I'll still do all the bad stuff Maybe it won't be so bad Oh my lord
- 20:56
Well, I don't want to wait another minute to find out whether you love me anymore.
- 21:00
I think that you should look me in the eyes and find out.
- 21:05
No.
- 21:07
Homer, look at me.
- 21:10
All right, all right. Look at her if it'll shut her up.
- 21:12
Start with the feet.
- 21:13
Still angry. Good. Good, Homer, good.
- 21:15
This is tough. Need refreshment.
- 21:18
Oh, good old trustworthy beer.
- 21:20
My love for you will never die.
