About the episode
A health scare prompts Grampa to confess that Homer has an older half-brother who was left at a Shelbyville orphanage. Homer tracks down Herb Powell, a rich Detroit car maker who welcomes the family and puts Homer in charge of designing a car for everyday drivers. Have you taken care of McBabe? You don't have to worry, Senator Mendoza.
- 1:00
By now, our dear friend, McBain, has met with a, shall we say,
- 1:05
unfortunate accident.
- 1:09
Excellent.
- 1:10
With McBain out of the way, nothing can stop us.
- 1:13
Any more new business?
- 1:16
Only your desk. McBain!
- 1:28
Oh, look, look!
- 1:30
McBain!
- 1:36
Meeting adjourned. $2.50 for this?
- 1:39
What a chip.
- 1:40
He certainly broke up that meeting. Right now,
- 1:43
I'm thinking about holding another meeting in bed.

Oh, McBain.

And thank you most of all for nuclear power,

- 2:33
At least in this country.
- 2:35
Amen. Very nicely said, Homer.
- 2:37
Dad, Bart ate a green bean during the blessing.
- 2:40
How do you know unless you open your eyes during the blessing?
- 2:42
Eating is worse than opening eyes. Is not.
- 2:44
Is to. Is not. Is to. Is not to. Quiet, you kids.
- 2:47
If I hear one more word,

Bart doesn't get to watch cartoons and Lisa doesn't get to go to college.

Dad! Not one word.
- 3:08
I thought I said knock it off. We didn't say anything.
- 3:10
Not one word. Well, no pantomime either.
- 3:13
Telephone, Homer. It's the hospital.
- 3:16
The hospital?
- 3:17
Yellow?
- 3:18
Oh, my God.
- 3:21
Homer, I'm... Happy to say that your father only had a mild arrhythmia.
- 3:25
But mild?
- 3:26
There wasn't anything mild about it! Now get back to the pharmacy, you quack!
- 3:33
Oh, with that feisty attitude, you'll bury us all, Grandpa Simpson.
- 3:40
Pull your chair closer, my son. What is it, Dad?
- 3:44
Be you!
- 3:44
Not that close! Yeesh.
- 3:47
Homer,
- 3:48
that heart attack made me realize that I'm going to die someday.
- 3:54
Oh, Dad, you and your imagination.
- 3:56
There's something I think you should know.
- 3:59
Homer, you have a half-brother. A half-brother?
- 4:03
Uh-huh.
- 4:04
It all happened while I was courting your mother.
- 4:08
I was checking out the skirts at the local carnival when I first saw her.
- 4:13
Hey, handsome, wanna dunk the clown?
- 4:16
She did things your mother would never do, like have sex for money.
- 4:22
A year later, the carnival came back to town and she had a little surprise for me.
- 4:29
We left a baby at the Shelbyville Orphanage and I never saw him again.
- 4:35
A year later, I married your mother and we had you.
- 4:39
Abe, I want Homer to grow up respecting his father.
- 4:42
He must never know about that carnival incident.
- 4:46
Okay. Promise you won't tell him. I promise.
- 4:49
Whoops!
- 4:50
Forget what I just told you.
- 4:52
What are you blubbering about?
- 4:55
This makes me feel special, Dad.
- 4:57
Since I'm the one you kept, that must mean you really love me.
- 5:00
Hmm.
- 5:01
Interesting theory.
- 5:02
I'm going to find my brother.
- 5:04
I don't care what it takes.
- 5:06
If I have to move heaven and earth, I'm going to find him.
- 5:09
Yeah, right. Good luck.
- 5:12
A long-lost half-brother.
- 5:14
How Dickensian? So, any idea where this bastard lives?
- 5:18
Bert! Well, his parents aren't married, are they?
- 5:20
It's the correct word, isn't it? I guess he's got us there.
- 5:24
Bastard, bastard, bastard, bastard. Bert!
- 5:26
Bert! Bastard, bastard, bastard, bastard, bastard, bastard.
- 5:30
148.
- 5:31
This is it. Uh, excuse me, is this an orphanage?
- 5:34
Ooh, you're a little late, pal.
- 5:36
They tore down the orphanage 30-odd years ago.
- 5:38
30 years?
- 5:39
I'll never find him. I'm doomed to walk through this life alone.
- 5:47
Oh, brother, where am I?
- 5:50
Take it easy, buddy. They moved across the street.
- 5:53
Oh, sorry.
- 5:55
I know how you feel, Mr. Simpson.
- 5:57
I myself have spent years searching for my long-lost twin brother.
- 6:02
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I wish I could help you, but we're looking for my brother today.
- 6:05
Can you tell me his name? Hmm.
- 6:08
According to our records, Mr. and Mrs. Powell adopted your brother and named him Herbert.
- 6:13
Herbert!
- 6:13
Herbert Powell!
- 6:15
Great! Where can I find him?
- 6:17
I'm sorry. I'm not allowed to release that information.
- 6:19
Oh, please, please. This is my life we're talking about here.
- 6:23
Well, I do sympathize with your situation, Mr.
- 6:26
Simpson.
- 6:27
After all, your brother could be anywhere.
- 6:29
Even Detroit.
- 6:31
I know he could be anywhere.
- 6:32
That's why I want you to narrow it down.
- 6:34
Please! You know, Mr. Simpson, if you ask me,
- 6:37
the city of brotherly love isn't Philadelphia, it's Detroit.
- 6:41
Well, if you ask me, changing a subject makes you the most worthless,
- 6:45
heartless excuse for a human being I ever...
- 6:48
Read between the lines, you fool. Oh, oh, I get it.
- 6:52
Okay.
- 6:53
Here's 20 bucks. Now will you tell me where my brother lives?
- 6:57
Mr. Simpson, I don't want to... Just take it and tell me.
- 6:59
Detroit. He lives in Detroit. Fine.
- 7:01
Thank you. Let's see.
- 7:03
Powell, Powell, Powell.
- 7:06
Comerance, Poole, Popkin, Potter, Quigley,
- 7:11
Quimby, Randolph. Oh, too far.
- 7:14
Here it is! Powell!
- 7:28
Any luck, homie? No, I called all three Herbert Powells in Detroit.
- 7:32
Nothing.
- 7:34
Well, you want to try that H Powell?
- 7:37
H! Of course!
- 7:39
That could stand for Herbert.
- 7:41
It's a long shot, but...
- 7:45
Yellow.
- 7:46
Is this H Powell of Detroit, Michigan? Yeah.
- 7:50
By any chance, does the H stand for Herbert?
- 7:53
Yeah.
- 7:53
Woo-hoo!
- 7:54
The H stands for Herbert!
- 7:56
Herb, were you adopted?
- 7:58
Yeah. From the Shelbyville Orphanage?
- 8:01
How did you know that? Because I'm your baby brother, Homer.
- 8:07
Hello?
- 8:10
Stupid phone! Hey, hey, knock it off! I'm here!
- 8:12
We're just silent because of the emotion involved.
- 8:15
Oh, sorry.
- 8:16
Homer, I think we need to get together. Okay, brother.
- 8:18
Grab the next plane to Springfield. We got a couch that folds out.
- 8:22
I'll tell you what.
- 8:23
Why don't you come here?
- 8:29
Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?
- 8:33
Are we there yet? Are we there yet?
- 8:34
Get a little further!
- 8:36
Lisa, if you don't behave, we'll turn this car right around and go home.
- 8:39
But Marge, I wanna see my brother!
- 8:42
Oh, for God's sakes, Homer, it's an empty thread.
- 8:50
Did you know you were going...
- 8:53
Oh!
- 8:54
Sorry, sir, I didn't know it was you. That's okay, carry on.
- 8:59
See the way I handle that, Marge?
- 9:06
Wow, what are you doing here? What does it look like?
- 9:17
Every day we're losing ground to the Japanese and I want to know why.
- 9:20
Oh, unfair trade practices? Mushy-headed one-worlders in Washington?
- 9:24
Uh, some sort of gypsy curse? I'm tired of excuses.
- 9:27
Why did I ever hire you Harvard deadheads?
- 9:30
Because you went there, sir. Yeah, but Mommy and Daddy didn't pay my way.
- 9:34
I had to work my way through washing your dishes and scrubbing your toilets.
- 9:38
Oh, yeah, now I remember you.
- 9:40
Have you come up with a name for our new economy model?
- 9:42
You're going to love this, Chief.
- 9:43
The Persephone.
- 9:46
Persephone? What the hell kind of name is Persephone?
- 9:49
She was the Greek goddess of spring and rebirth.
- 9:51
Oh, and get this, sir. She was carried off to Hades by the king of the underworld.
- 9:56
While there, she ate six pomegranates.
- 9:58
People don't want cars named after hungry old Greek broads!
- 10:02
They want names like Mustang and Cheetah, vicious animal names.
- 10:08
The problem with you guys is you've forgotten your roots.
- 10:12
You, what are your roots?
- 10:14
Well, I guess you could say they extend to when the Angles met the Saxons.
- 10:18
In other words, when white met bread. Sir,
- 10:21
we'd love to know what your roots are and what they have to teach us.
- 10:24
I have no roots.
- 10:26
All I know is that I'm just a lonely guy.
- 10:34
He's so upset about us. Remember him?
- 10:36
Good Lord.
- 10:37
Marge, this can't be the right address.
- 10:43
Hello in there.
- 10:45
Homer?
- 10:47
Herb?
- 10:48
You look just like... Except you got a little more.
- 10:53
And a little less.
- 10:55
God, I feel so.
- 10:58
Welcome to my home, brother.
- 11:04
Holy moly, the bastard's rich.
- 11:06
Herb, allow me to introduce my family. This is my wife, Mars.
- 11:11
Hello.
- 11:12
You old dog, she's gorgeous.
- 11:15
Thank you. And our three children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.
- 11:20
Hello, sir. Hello, Mr. Powell. All born in wedlock?
- 11:23
Yeah, though the boy was a close call.
- 11:25
So, Lisa, are you the little hell raiser your father told me about?
- 11:30
No, sir, I can assure you I'm not. I'm the little hell raiser, sir.
- 11:34
Would you like to hold the baby, Herb? I'm afraid I wouldn't know how.
- 11:37
No, what's to know? Just dive in.
- 11:42
God, that new baby smell.
- 11:45
Homer, you're the richest man I know.
- 11:48
I feel the same about you.
- 11:51
While you're here, I want you to make yourselves right at home.
- 11:54
Anytime you're hungry, anytime, day or night, cook will make you anything you want.
- 11:59
Even pork chops? Absolutely.
- 12:01
We have a tennis court, a swimming pool, a screening room.
- 12:04
You mean if I want pork chops even in the middle of the night, your guy will fry them up?
- 12:09
Sure. That's what he's paid for. Now, if you need towels, laundry, maids...
- 12:14
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Let me see if I got this straight.
- 12:16
Great.
- 12:17
It's Christmas Day, 4 a.m. There's a rumble in my stomach.
- 12:21
Homer, please.
- 12:22
Your old man sure loves pork chops. He sure does, Uncle Herb.
- 12:27
Bart, Uncle Herb sounds so formal. Do you think you could call me Unky Herb?
- 12:33
Oh, no problemo, Unky Herb.
- 12:35
He's adorable.
- 12:36
My nephew's adorable.
- 12:38
Marco.
- 12:39
Polo.
- 12:40
Marco.
- 12:41
Polo. Will you kids shut up? So, Marge, a little about yourself.
- 12:46
Oh, well, I met Homer in high school.
- 12:49
We got married and had three beautiful children.
- 12:52
Wow, we have so much catching up to do. Hmm, actually,
- 12:56
I just told you pretty much everything.
- 12:58
Watch me die! Watch me die!
- 13:00
Okay, we're watching!
- 13:02
I hope we're not spoiling them.
- 13:05
Man, you are watching! Did I do a double-waving with the half?
- 13:16
A millionaire?
- 13:18
Oh, I kept the wrong one. Look, son, I'll come as soon as I can get out of here.
- 13:23
In the meantime, please don't do anything stupid.
- 13:32
Uncle Herb, can I spit over the side?
- 13:35
I love this kid.
- 13:37
Hock your brains out.
- 13:41
Oh, got him!
- 13:44
Hello, cook.
- 13:45
Sorry to bother you so late, but I got a hankering for some...
- 13:48
That's right.
- 13:49
Don't forget the applesauce.
- 13:53
Okay, Homer, pick out anyone you want.
- 13:55
Are you sure you want to give me a car? Hey, you know what these things cost me?
- 14:00
There's maybe 40 bucks worth of steel in them.
- 14:03
Oh, okay.
- 14:05
I'd like a big one, then. We don't have a big one.
- 14:08
Why not? Because Americans don't want big cars.
- 14:11
Well, then give me one with lots of peps.
- 14:13
Sorry, our cars don't have pep. Why not?
- 14:15
Because Americans want good mileage, not pep.
- 14:18
Homer, tell the nice man what country you come from.
- 14:22
America.
- 14:23
Do you hear that, you morons? This is why we're getting killed in the marketplace.
- 14:27
Instead of listening to what people want, you're telling them what they want.
- 14:30
Homer, I need your help. You do?
- 14:34
Yeah.
- 14:36
I want you to help me design a car.
- 14:40
A car for all the Homer Simpsons out there.
- 14:44
And I want to pay you $200,000 a year. And I want to let you.
- 14:51
Homer, meet my team of engineers.
- 14:54
They're going to build your car.
- 14:56
Hiya, team.
- 14:57
Now, boys and girls, this project is our top priority.
- 15:00
Everything else is on hold. I don't want to see anything until it's finished.
- 15:04
But, sir, that's...
- 15:06
Direct all your questions to Mr. Homer Simpson.
- 15:09
the man with the vision the man who's gonna bust this company out of its rut
- 15:14
the man who's gonna change American transportation forever
- 15:19
so what kind of car would you like Mr.
- 15:21
Simpson I don't know whatever you kids wanna do today you just tell Unky Herb oh
- 15:27

- 15:36
ahoy matey yee-haw
- 15:39
Kids are so easy to please.
- 15:41
I really hope we're not spoiling them.
- 15:46
What's that? The onboard computer. All right.
- 15:49
Ooh, what's that doohickey? Mr. Sampson,
- 15:51
your brother told you to help us with this car, now, didn't he?
- 15:53
Oh, yeah, he did.
- 15:55
Well, why don't you get us some coffee?
- 15:58
Oh, okay.
- 16:00
Batting ninth, unky, heard!
- 16:05
Oh, boy. Hey, Homer, how's your car coming?
- 16:07
Oh, fine. You were putting in an onboard something or other and rack and peanut steering.
- 16:13
Homer.
- 16:13
Huh?
- 16:15
You didn't ask for rack and pinion steering, did you?
- 16:17
Oh, yeah. I think I did. How could you ask for it?
- 16:20
You don't even know what it is. You just called it rack and peanut steering.
- 16:23
Oh, may I be excused, please? No.
- 16:25
Homer, do you know why I gave you this job?
- 16:27
Because you think I'm a genius?
- 16:29
No, I don't think you're a genius. Well, because you think I'm dynamic?
- 16:32
I don't think you're dynamic.
- 16:34
You think I work well with others? No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 16:36
Homer, I gave you this job because you're an average schmo.
- 16:39
Oh, great.
- 16:40
All you need is a little self-confidence.
- 16:41
Oh, Uncle Herb, I don't know anything about the car.
- 16:44
Listen to me.
- 16:45
Here's what you do.
- 16:46
From now on, before you say anything, say to yourself, if I was ever sure of anything,
- 16:51
I'm sure of this. Do you understand? Sort of.
- 16:55
Homer, answer me again with self-confidence.
- 16:58
Sort of. Now go get him.
- 17:02
All right, you eggheads. I want a place in this car to put my drink.
- 17:05
Sir, the car has a beverage holder. Hello!
- 17:08
Hello, Einstein!
- 17:10
I set a place to put my drink!
- 17:12
You know those super slakers they sell in a quickie mart?
- 17:14
The cup is this big!
- 17:16
Extremely large beverage holder. And I'm not done yet!
- 17:19
You know that little ball you put on the aerial so you can find your car in the parking
- 17:22
lot? That should be on every car! Little ball?
- 17:26
And some things are so snazzy they never go out of style.
- 17:29
Like tail fins and bubble domes and jack carpeting.
- 17:34
Yellow.
- 17:35
Uh-huh.
- 17:36
Well, you know what?
- 17:37
I'm glad you're nervous, because that means we're on the right track.
- 17:41
Uh-huh.
- 17:44
Uh-huh. All right, all right.
- 17:46
Okay, this is what you're going to do. You're going to hang up, call me back,
- 17:50
and say the exact opposite of everything you just said.
- 17:53
Goodbye.
- 17:54
All right, Lisa, come over here. What is it, Uncle Herb?
- 17:56
I want you to hear what the guys down at the plant think of your old man.
- 17:59
Yellow.
- 18:01
Homer Simpson is a brilliant man with lots of well-thought-out
- 18:06
practical ideas.
- 18:08
He is ensuring the financial security of this company for years to come.
- 18:12
Oh, yes. And his personal hygiene is above reproach.
- 18:16
Whoa, I just think great.
- 18:18
Homer, I'm in threat. Pretty good, huh?
- 18:22
I want a horn here, here, and here.
- 18:24
You can never find a horn when you're mad.
- 18:27
And they should all play La Cucaracha. And do, Mr.
- 18:30
S. And sometimes the kids are in the back seat.
- 18:33
They're hollering. They're making you nuts.
- 18:35
There's got to be something you can do about that.
- 18:37
Maybe a built-in video game would keep them entertained?
- 18:40
They're fired!
- 18:41
What is my brother paying you for?
- 18:42
What about a separate soundproof bubble dome for the kids?
- 18:46
With optional restraints and muzzles.
- 18:48
Bullseye! And another thing. When I gun the motor,
- 18:51
I want people to think the world is coming to an end.
- 18:54
Vroom, vroom, vroom!
- 18:56
The mouse is named Itchy and the cat is named Scratchy.
- 19:00
They hate each other. And they're not shy about expressing it.
- 19:04
Good, good, good, good.
- 19:20
To think I wasted my life in boardrooms and stockholders' meetings!
- 19:25
when I could have been watching cartoons.
- 19:28
This old fool has wasted his life.
- 19:31
Ha ha ha ha ha!
- 19:34
Woo hoo!
- 19:44
Hello there.
- 19:45
Do you miss the Antarctic? Now this is spoiling them.
- 19:51
No, no, no, no, no, no! No, no, no!
- 20:03
Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed stockholders,
- 20:07
members of the press, your holiness,
- 20:10
tonight we are going to witness automotive history.
- 20:17
All my life, I have searched for a car that feels a certain way.
- 20:24
Powerful like a gorilla, yet soft and yielding like a Nerf ball.
- 20:28
Now at last, I have found it.
- 20:32
Ladies and gentlemen, presenting the car designed for the average man, the Homer.
- 20:45
Any questions?
- 20:46
What does this monstrosity cost? Jerry, what's the sticker price?
- 20:53
$82,000!
- 20:56
This monstrosity cost $82,000!
- 21:00
What have I done?
- 21:02
I mean, the zoo was fun, but I'm ruined!
