About the episode
Homer refuses to leave his warm bed one snowy Sunday, enjoys a blissful day alone while the family shivers at church, and announces he is done with services for good. God visits him in a dream and accepts his reasoning, but Homer's personal religion is put to the test when he dozes off with a cigar, sets the house ablaze and is rescued by Ned Flanders.

The door's frozen shut, and it's the only way out!
- 4:54
What am I gonna do? Our father, Martin, have a happy...
- 4:57
Lisa, this is neither the time nor the place.
- 4:59
That was Johnny Calhoun with Gonna Find Me a Genie with a Magic Bikini.
- 5:04
Of course, Johnny's next record was a spoken word album of his right-wing political views.
- 5:07
It kind of killed his career. If you can tell me the name of that album,
- 5:10
call our contest line now.
- 5:12
I know that!
- 5:19
Hello, this is Homer Simpson. Homer, can you name that title?
- 5:24
This Things I Believe.
- 5:26
Uh, can we accept that?
- 5:29
Woo-hoo!
- 5:32
How's that door coming, Willie?
- 5:34
Miracles are your department, Reverend.
- 5:37
While we're waiting, why don't I read from the Sunday Bulletin?
- 5:40
Card table for sale, top badly damaged, leg missing, otherwise fine.
- 5:45
One dollar or best offer.
- 5:48
You must be the three chiropractors I send for.
- 5:51
Now start manipulating my spine. Hey, Mo, we don't know nothing about manipulating.
- 5:55
You heard the lady.
- 5:56
Grab a spine and get cracking.
- 5:59
Mo is their leader.
- 6:01
Why, you?
- 6:06
Huzzah!
- 6:08
Play it, please, Christians.
- 6:10
Don't push.
- 6:11
Excuse me. Pardon me. Coming through. How you doing?
- 6:14
Love that hat, baby.
- 6:15
Come on, TV.
- 6:16
Give me some of that sweet, sweet pep.
- 6:20
Let's define our terms, gentlemen.
- 6:21
Are we talking about redistricting or are we talking about reapportionment?
- 6:25
Oh, well.
- 6:26
Can't win them all. We interrupt this public affairs program to bring you a football game.
- 6:31
Yes!
- 6:42
Give it a little more gas.
- 6:44
No, no, that's too much.
- 6:46
You know what I think would help? What? What would help?
- 6:50
Nothing.
- 6:51
Oh, doctor, a 98-yard triple reverse tires the score at 63-63.
- 6:56
We have seen nothing but razzle-dazzle here today.
- 6:59
Three visits from Morgana the Kissing Bandit and the astonishing return of Jim Brown.
- 7:03
Woo-hoo!
- 7:06
Is that what I think it is?
- 7:12
Mm-hmm.
- 7:14
I found a penny!
- 7:18
Could this be the best day of my life?
- 7:27
Looks like we have a new champion.
- 7:31
Ah, my beloved family. How was church?
- 7:35
Forget that, you old family.
- 7:38
I, on the other hand, have been having the best day of my life,
- 7:42
and I owe it all to skipping church. That's a terrible thing to say, kids.
- 7:46
Your father doesn't really mean that. Like fun, I don't.
- 7:49
Marge, I'm never going to church again.
- 7:52
Homer, are you actually giving up your faith?
- 7:55
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 7:59
Well, yes.
- 8:05
I can't believe you're giving up church, Homer.
- 8:08
Hey, what's the big deal about going to some building every Sunday?
- 8:11
I mean, isn't God everywhere?
- 8:13
Amen, brother.
- 8:14
And don't you think that the Almighty has better things to worry about than where one
- 8:18
little guy spends one measly hour of his week?
- 8:20
Tell it, Daddy.
- 8:21
And what if we pick the wrong religion?
- 8:23
Every week we're just making God madder and madder.
- 8:26
Testify!
- 8:30
Lord, my husband is by no means perfect, but he's a kind, decent man.
- 8:36
Please show him the error of his ways.
- 8:38
Marge, come to bed.
- 8:40
No, Homer.
- 8:41
He doesn't mean to be sacrilegious, Lord.
- 8:44
He just likes to sleep in on Sundays.
- 8:48
Marge, come to bed, Marge.
- 8:52
Lord, he's not a bad person, Lord, really He just sometimes...
- 8:56
It's good for what ails you He doesn't mean any harm I can wait all
- 9:22
Huh?
- 9:25
God?
- 9:26
Thou hast forsaken my church!
- 9:30
Well, kind of, but... But what?
- 9:33
I'm not a bad guy.
- 9:35
I work hard and I love my kids.
- 9:38
So why should I spend half my Sunday hearing about how I'm going to hell?
- 9:43
Hmm.
- 9:44
You've got a point there.
- 9:46
You know, sometimes even I'd rather be watching football.
- 9:51
Does St. Louis still have a team?
- 9:53
No, they moved to Phoenix.
- 9:54
Oh, yeah.
- 9:55
You know what I really hate about church?
- 9:57
Those boring sermons.
- 10:00
I couldn't agree more.
- 10:02
That Reverend Lovejoy really displeases me.
- 10:05
I think I'll give him a canker sore.
- 10:08
Give him one for me.
- 10:09
I will.
- 10:10
So I figure I should just try to live right and worship you in my own way.
- 10:15
Homer, it's a deal.
- 10:17
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to appear in a tortilla in Mexico.
- 10:31
Dad, can I ask you a question?
- 10:33
Sure, honey. Why are you dedicating your life to blasphemy?
- 10:36
Don't worry, sweetheart.
- 10:37
If I'm wrong, I'll recant on my deathbed.
- 10:42
Hello, my animal friends.
- 10:45
Peace be with you.
- 10:48
Guys, please, could you give me five minutes?
- 10:51
Reverend Lovejoy, I had a bit of an ulterior motive in inviting you to dinner.
- 10:55
What? No, it's nothing bad.
- 10:57
I'm just concerned because my husband hasn't been attending your services lately.
- 11:02
Well, I wasn't sure I was doing the right thing,
- 11:04
but then God himself told me I should seek a new path.
- 11:07
Oh, really?
- 11:08
Yeah.
- 11:09
He appeared before me in a dream,
- 11:11
and I knew that was special because I usually dream about naked...
- 11:15
Marge.
- 11:16
So, Homer, you saw the big cheese? What'd he look like?
- 11:19
Perfect teeth, nice smell, a class act all the way.
- 11:23
Homer, you're crazy. Tell him this is all crazy.
- 11:26
Homer, I'd like you to remember Matthew 7, 26.
- 11:30
The foolish man who built his house on sand.
- 11:34
And you remember Matthew 21, 17.
- 11:40
And he left them and went out of the city into Bethany and he lodged there?
- 11:46
Yeah.
- 11:47
Think about it.
- 11:49
Oh, work. This is Homer Simpson.
- 11:51
I won't be coming in tomorrow.
- 11:53
Religious holiday.
- 11:54
The, uh, feast of maximum occupancy.
- 11:58
Pretty slick.
- 11:59
You should join my religion, Moe. It's great.
- 12:02
No hell, no kneeling. Sorry, Homer.
- 12:05
I was born a snake handler and I'll die a snake handler.
- 12:10
Neighbor,
- 12:11
I heard about your heresy and we've made it our mission to win you back to the flock.
- 12:17
No sale. Homer, Christian life isn't all praying and sacrifice.
- 12:21
Hey, dig this.
- 12:22
God said to Noah, there's gonna be a floody-floody.
- 12:29
Rain came down, it started to get muddy-muddy.
- 12:38
Get those animals out on the arky-arky. Leave me alone.
- 12:43
Dad, the heathen's getting away.
- 12:46
I see him, son.
- 13:18
Where are we going?
- 13:20
Garbage island.
- 14:02
Let's go, kids.
- 14:03
How come we have to go to church and Dad gets to steal them and watch cartoons?
- 14:07
Hmm.
- 14:09
I have a responsibility to raise these children right.
- 14:12
And unless you change, I'll have to tell them their father is, well, wicked.
- 14:17
Kids, let me tell you about another so-called wicked guy.
- 14:21
He had long hair and some wild ideas,
- 14:24
and he didn't always do what other people thought was right.
- 14:28
And that man's name was... I forget.
- 14:33
But the point is...
- 14:35
I forget that, too. Marge, you know who I'm talking about.
- 14:38
He used to drive that blue car. Kids, could you wait outside for us?
- 14:44
Homer, please don't make me choose between my man and my God, because you just can't win.
- 14:49
There you go again. Always taking someone else's side.
- 14:53
Flanders, the water department, God.
- 14:56
I'm only going to ask you one last time.
- 15:00
Are you sure you won't come with us to church?
- 15:02
Coming up next, make your own ladder.
- 15:04
Very sure.
- 15:09
My friends, the devil walks among us.
- 15:15
I got him!
- 15:17
Oh, don't look for the pitchfork and pointy tail.
- 15:19
Today's devil has assumed a more seductive form, pleasing to the eye.
- 15:25
Oh, an interview with Lord Michaels.
- 15:29
Wait, that's no good.
- 15:31
Hey, now we're talking.
- 15:33
Our unabashed dictionary defines IUD as love springs internal.
- 15:39
Hehehehe.
- 15:40
I don't get it.
- 15:43
Hello.
- 15:44
I'm collecting for the Brotherhood of Jewish Clowns.
- 15:48
Last year, tornadoes claimed the lives of 75 Jewish clowns.
- 15:52
The worst incident was during our convention in Lubbock, Texas.
- 15:56
There were floppy shoes and rainbow weeks everywhere.
- 15:59
It was terrible.
- 16:03
Wait a minute. Is this a religious thing?
- 16:06
A religious clown thing, yes. Sorry.
- 16:08
Well, bless you, Eddie.
- 16:10
Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
- 16:15
Appu, I see you're not in church. Oh, but I am.
- 16:18
I have a shrine to Ganesha, the god of worldly wisdom, located in the employee lounge.
- 16:23
Hey, Ganesha, want a peanut?
- 16:25
Please do not offer my god a peanut. No offense, Appu,
- 16:28
but when they were handing out religions, you must have been out taking a whiz.
- 16:31
Mr. Simpson, please pay for your purchases and get out and come again.
- 16:35
Pride goeth before destruction. Boy,
- 16:39
everyone is stupid except me.
- 17:02
Marge, turn on the heat.
- 17:04
That's better.
- 17:28
Fire!
- 17:29
What do I do? What do I do?
- 17:33
Oh, the song!
- 17:34
The song! When a fire starts to burn, there's a lesson you must learn.
- 17:38
Something, something, then you'll see, you'll avoid catastrophe.
- 17:43
Don't!
- 17:48
Fire at the old Simpson place.
- 17:53
You are on your honor not to steal anything.
- 17:55
Oh, we won't.
- 17:59
Little jump shed, this store is in your hands.
- 18:02
How many have waited for this day?
- 18:20
You ducks are really trying my patience.
- 18:23
But you're so cute.
- 18:27
Homer!
- 18:38
No!
- 18:52
Dear Lord, may your loving hand guide Homer to the mattress square and true.
- 19:03
Okay
- 19:15
Flanders, you saved me
- 19:19
Heck, you'd have done the same for me Help!
- 19:24
Help!
- 19:27
Heh heh heh.
- 19:28
That's right, old friend.
- 19:30
Dad!
- 19:31
Oh, homie, are you alright?
- 19:33
Our magazine's in roach traps.
- 19:35
Gone.
- 19:36
All gone.
- 19:40
I saved your cat.
- 19:43
Ow! That hurt.
- 19:46
Hi! What are these axes for? I don't know.
- 19:50
Chopping stuff. Gotcha!
- 19:55
That's some nice chopping.
- 19:57
Truly, this was an act of God.
- 20:01
Hey, wait a minute. Flanders is a regular Charlie Church, and God didn't save his house.
- 20:11
Any valuables in the house?
- 20:13
Well, the Picasso, my collection of classic cars.
- 20:17
Sorry, this policy only covers actual losses, not made-up stuff.
- 20:21
Well, that's just great.
- 20:23
Fire, man's oldest foe. Insatiable, remorseless, unquenchable Hey,
- 20:29
it's out!
- 20:31
Coming up next, which work better, springy clothespins or the other kind?
- 20:40
You know, I have a feeling there's a lesson here Yes, the lesson is...
- 20:45
No, don't tell me, I'll get it Oh, I know,
- 20:49
the Lord is vengeful Oh, spiteful one,
- 20:53
show me who to smite and they shall be smootin' Homer,
- 20:56
God didn't set your house on fire No,
- 20:59
but he was working in the hearts of your friends and neighbors When they went to your aid,
- 21:03
were they Christian, Jew, or miscellaneous Hindu,
- 21:08
there are 700 million of us Oh,
- 21:10
that's super I was rude to every one of you And you saved my life when you could have just
- 21:16
left me to fry Like the proverbial pancake that I am Oh, homie,
- 21:21
I'm so glad to hear you say that.
- 21:23
Now, would you give church another try?
- 21:26
I'll be there next Sunday, front row center.
- 21:38
Don't feel bad, Homer. Nine out of ten religions fail in their first year.
- 21:44
That's game, Hendrix.
- 21:47
God, I gotta ask you something.
- 21:49
What's the meaning of life? Homer, I can't tell you that.
- 21:53
Come on.
- 21:54
You'll find out when you die.
- 21:57
I can't wait that long.
- 21:59
You can't wait six months? No, tell me now.
- 22:03
Well, okay.
- 22:05
The meaning of life is...
- 22:23
Thank you.
- 22:50
Shh.
