What happens

A crowd of Puritan-costumed townsfolk gathers in a grey, overcast village square, where a heavy man in a tall buckled black hat and white collar stands at the front, with Homer, a bald man with stubble in a brown hat, and Bart in the crowd behind him. Three guards in brown helmets, one of them Carl, hold flaming torches while the crowd watches, and a torch is then pressed into a pile of kindling. Three women are bound to wooden stakes on a stone platform as the fires are lit, with townsfolk holding torches and a leafless tree and the sea behind them.
