What happens

A crowd of Puritan-costumed villagers in bonnets, black hats and tall collars, some carrying torches and pitchforks, gathers on a grey, overcast village green. A man in a black hat raises his fist while women clasp their hands, then three women bound with rope to wooden stakes stand in a row, one glaring and another with glasses looking stern. The villagers press forward toward the stakes, and a girl in a tall white bonnet and collar speaks with wide eyes and an open mouth, pointing outward with a white-cuffed arm, before her expression tightens into a clenched-teeth grimace against the backdrop of bare branches and flaming torches.
